AZ-900, why did I take it ? How did I pass it

Certifications, Microsoft

It’s been a while since I passed a Microsoft exam, the last exam I took was Upgrading your Skills to MCSA Windows Server 2012! Geeez.. That’s been a long time. What can I say I really invested my time in learning VMware so I didn’t really get a lot of chance to do Microsoft exams. I know, I am heavily certified in VMware so why am I taking Microsoft exams now ? 1 word, AZURE! Looks like it’s the new thing 🙂 everyone moving or migrating to cloud!

Hey Ill be honest, I tried to take the AZ-104 on 12/2022 and I failed, it’s a hard exam for me as I didn’t really have enough hands on experience with Azure but with a expiring voucher might as well try right ? Anyway don’t take AZ-104 if you don’t have much hands on, take AZ-900 instead. This exam was focus in testing you if you understand the basics of Azure, that’s why they named this “Fundamentals” if you have the knowledge of Azure cloud services and understand resource groups, PaaS, SaaS, IaaS, hyrbrid cloud, setting up Virtual networking then take this exam! It’s $99. I highly suggest following the certification path though and take the free Microsoft classes in Microsoft certification website. I didn’t get the highest score but hey a pass is a pass right ?

Materials I used
Self Paced training provided by Microsoft
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/certifications/exams/az-900/
Pluralsight and couple of youtube videos (search Azure fundamentals free classes)
bonus: if you know or currently work with someone who manages Azure, ask that person questions. That also helped me as I have friends who are Azure admins and whenever I have questions that I see in the videos I ask them, and they can show me live on how to do it in the portal

if you have any questions please feel free to ask 🙂

The command(s) that always saves my job

On

April 21, 2023

So ever had the following problems

  1. Maintenance mode stuck
  2. Task(s) Stuck on host
  3. Consolidating snapshots takes a while and I need to use the VM now
  4. vMotion is taking forever gets stuck around 20% 32%
  5. Host is disconnected
  6. and many more

SO… use this at your own risk.
Each company has different policies, but these commands will not restart the host or disconnect the host. It will restart the services and will save you headaches instead of using our best friend google. Some company wants fast results, well here you go 😀 If they don’t work ? well… you’re own your own 🙂 I’m kidding contact VMware support (If they respond fast enough *cough cough*)

# /etc/init.d/hostd restart
# /etc/init.d/vpxa restart

Thank me later 🙂

General vSAN error. vSAN disk data evacuation resource check has failed for disk or disk-group

On

January 27, 2023

Scenario: One of your vSAN drives failed and you replaced it.
Now you have to destroy and recreate the disk groups. Then you get this beatiful error
“General vSAN error. vSAN disk data evacuation resource check has failed for disk or disk-group”

I suggest you remove the DG in the

esxcli system maintenanceMode set –enable true -m ensureObjectAccessibility
esxcli system maintenanceMode set –enable true -m evacuateAllData

esxcli vsan storage list

record VSAN Disk Group UUID:

esxcli vsan storage remove -u

If no errors are recorded that means your diskgroup is deleted
You can either recreate it again

bash: !! :event not found

On

January 20, 2023

So you are in an SSH session on your vCenter Appliance then you get an error
bash: !! :event not found (when entering details for local administrator account)

unfortunately if your local SSO password has two “!” symbols this is the main cause 🙂
All you need to do is update it to just use 1 “!”

Problem solved 🙂

WorkSpace One and Server 2022 Domain Controllers not fully compatible

On

January 20, 2023

Before upgrading / replacing your Domain Controllers that are older than 2022 think again!

If you have an AD group with 1000+ users and gets synced with WorkSpace one, that group will present as 0 users in 2022 DCs.

So before doing anything in AD think about this.

What if you already have 2022 Servers in the pool?
The only fix is to edit your WS1 host files to point to a DC that is not a 2022 Server
Then re-sync

vSphere DRS Functionality was impacted due to unhealthy state vSphere Cluster Service.

On

January 17, 2023

You update vSphere to 7.0 and you get the error below.

If you don’t have an orphaned VLCS machine the step to take is Disable HA and Renable it on the cluster that is giving you an error

If that doesn’t work follow the 2 KBs below (SNAPSHOT SNAPSHOT SNAPSHOT)

Step 1
Step 2

If the above doesn’t work submit a ticket to VMware 🙂
make sure to let them know that the steps above are already done

Love and Hate VMware Support – your patience will get tested

On

January 16, 2023

Oh…. How I miss pre-covid when you call VMware tech support you only needed 1 call to get your problem resolved. They even educate you on how to fix your problem if you get it again.

As I said as much as I love VMWare. The support is not what it used to be, in the past the only reply you get is “please upload a support bundle” after a support bundle is uploaded the tech will initiate a zoom session then fix the problem.. But these days Post Covid-2023. Even with Skyline’s send support log assist feature, you will get an email about “Did you try this and did you try that” For most VMware guys, we look at KBs before even submitting a ticket. Look we get it, you can be busy because of other support calls, but some customers have paid extra to get the best support but some still dont. This applies to all departments/technoligies vSphere, vRealize, NSX, etc. VMware if you are reading this some of your customers will lose patience. I think things below might make your support better.

  1. If your customer has paid extra and already using skyline to send logs, If the severity is not low, nobody wants to read a KB from an email from support, the ticket was opened because of help is needed. The email from a tech needs to be a calendar invite saying lets connect to look at the problem and check some settings.
  2. Tech support needs to send calendar invite not an email about a zoom session, some customers are lucky to get TAM service and the TAM fixes that void but not everyone has TAM! (Hey VMware there is TAM named Chad T. that you should clone, guy understands customers since he was also a customer before).
  3. Techs should follow a troubleshooting workflow, not just jump the gun and do it.
  4. DONT SEND A KB Article to the customer needing help (I know this is a repeat)
  5. Have the tech’s mute if they are not talking, sometimes there’s background music/noise, we get it it’s Work From Home world. Sometimes its an office full of tech as well that we can hear conversations.
  6. If there’s a long silence lets say the tech is looking at a document, follow up every minute “I am still here” don’t let the customer ask “are you still there”

Hey nobody is perfect right ? As a tech guy I’ve been in situations where I get too many tickets to address, but that doesn’t mean that I will just reply to the email and say did you try this? Try to delegate and pass tickets to colleagues esp if it’s high-priority and affecting production.

We know during covid a lot of techs jumped shipped and probably VMware had shortage, it’s understandable too that you might have new employees that are still in training, these are just recommendations I have. Not all customers are patient. I am sure some will agree and some will get mad, but hey. I just want to put it out there. Cheers!

VMware Explore 2022

VMware Explore 2022

Finally got a chance to write my review, it’s 9/6 and I am still thinking about VMworld 2022! This is my 2nd in person VMworld the last one was 2019. Well let’s get to it, first thing that I noticed was the attendees, it wasn’t as much as 2019, but hey COVID is still there and some are still comfortable of doing in person or just wanted to do it online, also there was not much in the expo, a lot of empty spaces in the Moscone South Building. Also, they moved the keynotes to Tuesday, this is actually a good move, not everyone comes in on Sunday, this was a great move If you ask me.

It’s really great to be back in person, the past two VMworld were remote, it did work but for me in person is better due to the networking aspect and face to face interaction with everybody, I get to meet vExperts Tim Burkard (vGandalf), Chiffon H (VMware Learning Expert), Cosmin T (vRealize Expert), and many more!

So why did they change the name to VMware Explore from VMworld? During this conference the motto was “We are explorers” Raghu’s keynote was about “Developers” and the shortage for developers, the event is not just for infrastructure folks, which fits the name. The conference is now for both devs and infra folks. It’s amazing how technology is really evolving, I’m not a big fan of the cloud 10 years ago and look where the future is headed. TO THE CLOUD. VMware really showcased that they have all the tools for your cloud needs! I won’t go into detail but I highly suggest to watch all the videos from the event. Not everything can be moved to the cloud so hybrid is still here.

What stuck on me during the 2022 event? The HOL’s and VMware Odyssey! Also, to mention they have a new demo called the solutions test drive, it’s a hands-on where you can actually test products such as HCX! The HOL’s were really helpful, I took the vRa one and it has a section for doing ABX actions! Can’t wait for those labs to be available publicly! The Odyssey was really the highlight! 3 days covers different sections! Day 1 was VMtools, Day 2 was vSan and Day 3 was vRa I thought I was going to make the top 10 overall but unfortunately, I didn’t I really wanted to compete for the final day 😊 but hey I can practice more!

I wasn’t surprised about the release of vSphere 8 and vSan 8. What I’m really surprised was the re-brand of vRealize to Aria, sure it’s going to on-board more public cloud, but I am sure there are more features if you use the cloud version vs the on-premise, but hey in this time you really have to be ready for adapting to new technology, I am sure a lot of VMw customers are not happy about this but they it is what it is.

So why am I making this review now? After careful consideration and talking to multiple experts, I think I will be documenting all of my VMware experience 😊 I will also share any tech knowledge I may have that might be able to help someone. BTW the expo has tons of giveaways! Ill post tips on how to get the most out of the expo soon

Hoping I can attend next year’s event!
